Waiting hours for a cellphone to charge may become a thing of the past, thanks to an 18-year-old high-school student’s invention. She won a $50,000 prize Friday at an international science fair for creating an energy storage device that can be fully juiced in 20 to 30 seconds.

1. Linking this to mobile phones is dumb. The problem for most people is that the 8 hours they charge it overnight doesn’t last them through the day, and capacitors have a much lower energy density than batteries do.

2. This in itself is an improvement upon a previous invention. Supercapacitors have been around for decades. If this particular variant became commonly used, it’d be the result of the work of hundreds of others as much as it is hers.

Snaps of platforms 26 & 27 at Central Station, Sydney. They were never operational, but were once used for document storage. They are located above platforms 24/25, which explains why 24/25 are so deep beneath the station. Apparently there are locked doors off the staircase leading to 24/25 which access the abandoned platforms.
